Recreation

The large variety of ways to spend one's spare time in Golden Valley County are as varied as the people who live here. Many of the activities are seasonal, which is one of the great reasons for living in western North Dakota.

Summer brings one of the busiest places in Beach to life - the municipal swimming pool in Memorial Park. Just a few years ago the water complex got a whole new make over. It sports an ever-popular slide, as well as a turtle-shaped baby pool. Each June swimming lessons and lifeguard classes are held at the pool.

A softball complex in the northwest corner of town is a busy spot throughout the summer. The highlight is the annual Stals & Gals softball tournament held in May.

Other summer activities available in the area are fishing, boating and jet skiing at Odland Dam, located less than 10 miles north of Beach. Some also try their luck at fishing at Camel Hump Lake, 9 miles east of Beach just off I-94 Exit 10.

Memorial Park also includes a couple of horseshoe courts and a softball field. The picnic area next to the pool is the site of many family gatherings throughout the summer.

As fall rolls across the hills, the hunters take to the fields for grouse, turkeys, deer and antelope. Hundreds of sport hunters come to western North Dakota for the elusive trophy. As the temperatures drop, sportsters turn to indoor sports, such as pool and darts, offered in The Backyard Bar. Leagues for both sports involve players from other towns. The high school football and volleyball teams attract a lot of spectators cheering for the Buccaneers.

With snow drifts covering the hills, residents turn to more sedate entertainment such as card playing. The skating rink next to Memorial Park gets the young and young at heart out in the fresh winter air. For the more robust outdoorsmen, ice fishing and snowmobiling are great in Golden Valley County.
